What is the TI-83, really

A quick history, since a lot of people asking about this calculator inherited one rather than bought it.

The TI-83 came out in 1996 as an upgrade to the older TI-82, and for a while it was one of the most common graphing calculators in American classrooms. Texas Instruments later released the TI-83 Plus in 1999 and the TI-83 Plus Silver Edition in 2001, both improvements on the original. In 2004, the TI-84 Plus took over as the standard, but the TI-83 never fully disappeared. It still shows up in thrift stores, hand-me-downs, and the backs of closets, and it still works fine for most of what a math class actually asks you to do. You can read more background on the TI-83 series on Wikipedia or see the official specs on Texas Instruments' site.

If you're deciding between calculator models rather than working with one you already have, our full TI-83 vs TI-84 Plus vs TI-84 Plus CE comparison covers that in more detail.

What you can actually do with it

The TI-83 covers more than most people expect from a calculator this old.

Graphing modes

Function, parametric, polar, and sequence graphing, all through the same Y= editor the TI-84 uses.

Statistics and regression

Mean, median, standard deviation, quartiles, and linear or quadratic regression.

Trigonometry

Sine, cosine, tangent, and their inverses, useful for any unit on triangles or angles.

Matrix operations

Add, subtract, find the inverse, determinant, and reduced row echelon form.

Data plotting

Box plots, scatter plots, and histograms through the STAT PLOT menu.

Basic finance

Time value of money calculations for loans, savings, and simple investment decisions.

What the TI-83 can't do

Being straight about this now saves you a headache later if you need one of these features.

No Python programming

Python support did not show up until the TI-84 Plus CE Python edition. The TI-83 only runs TI-BASIC.

Decimal answers, not exact ones

There's no computer algebra system, so it won't simplify an answer to something like pi or the square root of 2. It'll give you the decimal instead. Newer scientific calculators, like the Casio fx-991EX or the TI-30X Pro MathPrint, handle this differently.

No MathPrint

Fractions and equations show up as plain text instead of the natural, textbook-style formatting the TI-84 Plus introduced.

Slower and smaller memory

Even the fastest version, the TI-83 Plus Silver Edition, is noticeably slower than a TI-84 Plus and holds fewer programs.

Is an old or secondhand TI-83 still worth using? For most algebra, geometry, trig, and early calculus classes, yes. The math it does hasn't changed, and people who've had the same TI-83 since the late 90s still report the screen and buttons working fine, sometimes with an occasional faint line that clears up on its own.

The honest catch: if you're choosing between buying a used TI-83 and a similarly priced TI-84 Plus, the TI-84 Plus is the better pick since it does everything the TI-83 does plus MathPrint, more memory, and ongoing support. But if you already own a working TI-83, there's rarely a real reason to replace it just because it's old.

How to use the TI-83 calculator online

The button layout is nearly identical to the TI-84, so this will feel familiar fast.

  1. Open the calculator above.
  2. Type your equation using the on-screen keypad or your keyboard.
  3. Press ENTER to calculate.
  4. To graph something, press Y=, type your equation, then press GRAPH.
  5. Press WINDOW if the graph looks cut off or too small.
  6. Press TRACE to move along the graph and read exact points.
Quadratic equation
x² + 5x + 6 = 0

Press Y=, enter the equation, press GRAPH, then use 2nd TRACE Zero on each root.

x = -2 and x = -3
Graphing a function
y = x² - 4

Press Y=, type the equation, press GRAPH, and trace the curve to see where it crosses zero.

Crosses at x = -2, x = 2
Basic trig
sin(30°)

Press MODE, select Degree, type sin(30), then press ENTER.

Result: 0.5

Is the TI-83 allowed on the SAT, ACT, or AP exams? Yes, a working physical TI-83 or TI-83 Plus is accepted on the SAT, PSAT, ACT, AP Calculus, AP Chemistry, and AP Physics exams. It's allowed for a simple reason: it has no computer algebra system, no WiFi, and no Bluetooth, so it can't be used to look up answers or communicate with anything.

This online version is for practice only. Testing centers don't allow phones, tablets, or laptops in the room, so bring the physical calculator on test day. Confirm current-year policy on College Board's or ACT's official site before your exam, since rules can change.

TI-83 or TI-84? A straight answer

If you already own a working TI-83, keep using it. It handles algebra, geometry, trig, statistics, and most of early calculus just fine, and none of that math has changed. If you're buying new or replacing a broken one, get the TI-84 Plus instead. It costs about the same as a used TI-83 in many cases, adds MathPrint, more memory, and stays supported. See the full model comparison table for exact specs side by side.

Who this is actually for

Students with a hand-me-down

If a sibling, parent, or thrift store handed you a TI-83, this confirms it still works the way your class needs.

Budget-conscious buyers

Try it here before deciding if it's worth buying a used one or stepping up to a TI-84.

Teachers

Useful if older material or a specific unit was written around TI-83 menus.

Anyone double-checking homework

Frequently asked questions

Is the TI-83 calculator online actually free?

Yes. No sign up, no subscription, and nothing to download.

Does the TI-83 support Python programming?

No. Python support did not arrive until the TI-84 Plus CE Python edition. The TI-83 only runs TI-BASIC.

Can I bring my physical TI-83 into the SAT or ACT?

Yes, a working physical TI-83 or TI-83 Plus is accepted because it has no computer algebra system, WiFi, or Bluetooth. This online version is for practice only and cannot be used during the actual test.

Is my work saved when I use the online calculator?

No. Nothing you type is stored or sent anywhere. Take a screenshot before you close the tab if you want to keep it.

Is a secondhand or thrift store TI-83 still worth buying?

Usually yes for basic algebra through early calculus, as long as the screen and buttons work, though a similarly priced TI-84 Plus is a meaningfully better upgrade if you have the option.

What is the difference between the TI-83 and the TI-83 Plus?

The TI-83 Plus added flash memory, which let the operating system be updated and let users store more programs and data. The original TI-83 does not have this.
